Get in the Halloween spirit this week with J.S. Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565.

It's unclear exactly when this organ work was composed, and some scholars have even questioned if J.S. Bach wrote it. Felix Mendelssohn premiered the work in 1840 but it remained relatively unrecognized until the early 20th century; its popularity surged after its use in the Disney film Fantasia in the 1940s. It's been arranged for piano, symphony orchestra, and brass ensemble, but the original organ version is performed here by Hannes Kastner at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig.

Authorized users can view the score to Toccata and Fugue in D minor, available from Music Online: Classical Scores Library. Also available to all users are several video performances of the work, including performances by award-winning organist Leo van Doeselaar and Rodney Gehrke, professor of organ at San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
