For the past several weeks, we've brought you a Circle of Fifths: fifth symphonies by five composers of the Classical, Romantic, and Modern eras.

The final download in this series features the most famous of fifth symphonies: Beethoven's Symphony No. 5. From rock to disco and reality TV show theme songs, Beethoven's Fifth is one of the most repurposed and easily recognized selections of classical music. Beethoven wrote this symphony in 1804-1808, and it premiered at a concert in 1808 that also included the premieres of his Symphony No. 6, selections from his Mass in C minor, Piano Concerto No. 4, and Choral Fantasy.

This recording is performed by the Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Franz Konwitschny.
