Reflexive Postmodern Anthropolgy Meets Musical "Modernism": Georgina Born's Rationalizing Culture: IRCAM, Boulez, and the Institutionalization of the Musical Avant-Garde. Berkeley, California: University of California Press, 1995, 390 pp.

This review-article seeks to identify problems inherent in the terms "modernism," "post-modernism," "experimental music," "serialism," "postserialism," "neoclassicism," "avant-garde," and a host of other concepts as used by Born in her recent book "Rationalizing Culture: IRCAM, Boulez, and the Institutionalization of the Musical Avant-Garde." These problems undermine an otherwise refreshing anthropological look at the struggles involving power and aesthetics in the premier government-supported musical organization that was Boulez's IRCAM.
