Wagner's beloved comedy, absent from San Francisco since 2001, offered much to enjoy--a well-integrated cast of singers, an immersive orchestral performance under conductor Mark Elder, and an eminently humanistic production by McVicar that skillfully balanced the opera's strains of earthy humor and lofty meditations on love, community and the power of music to change the world.
