The Norwegian director has related how he and his set designer, Erlend Birkeland, delved into memories of their youth as would-be artists in order to create this "La Bohème" as a play-within-a-play, set in a small-town theater. The customs officers at the outskirts of Paris were dressed in colorful paper as jousting knights, while four middle-aged men representing snowflakes gave us their version of Tchaikovsky's "Dance of the Little Swans."
