While Smith's recent albums have been massive in scope (both in terms of subject matter and number of musicians involved), The Great Lakes Suites finds Smith getting back to a lean, powerful quartet setting, substituting saxophonist (and fellow AACM-er) Henry Threadgiil for a pianist in Smith's long-running Golden Quartet.
